Friends rock my good mood every day

friends_monkeybarsA Friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of Nature.
                             – Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) US poet & essayist

I have been very lucky in my life to have made many friends. Although some have moved in and out of my life over the years, the warmth we share always seems to remain – easily rekindled at our next meeting.

Life moves so fast, it’s easy to lose touch with friends. I am as guilty as the next person when it comes to letting things slide. With all the demands on our time, it’s easy for friendships to slip further and further down the priority list. It seems to me that each chance meeting I have starts with the words, “Oh my gosh! It’s been forever! I’ve been so busy. How have you been?” and ends with the unfulfilled promise of a cup of coffee.

No one’s to blame. It’s the nature of things. Everyone is busy. Everyone has their own lives to lead. That’s why I’m so grateful for friends who can empathize, for friends who are just happy to see me – even when we haven’t spent time together for, literally, years. Two summers ago, I reconnected with a childhood friend who had moved across the country. Though we hadn’t even spoken to each other for years, we whiled away three hours at a local coffee shop when she came to town. Time may have passed, but that didn’t change the bond between us. Although our lives had diverged on different roads, our fond reminisces easily transitioned into deep and open discussions about our current lives. It was wonderful.

Over the past few days – the first of my campaign for a top-twenty spot in the Good Mood Gig Talent Search – I have been touched by the support of friends both near and far. I’ve got a long way to go to get the votes I need to make the cut, but even if it all ended tomorrow; I’m grateful for the wonderful friends I have and the enthusiastic and genuine support they’ve shown me.

I was listening to this Bill Witherspoon’s song Lovely Day this morning (it was a gift from another dear friend) and thought I’d share it with you here. Click the link if you’d like to listen on YouTube. If not – here are some of the lyrics:

When the day that lies ahead of me
Seems impossible to face
When someone else instead of me
Always seems to know the way
Then I look at you
And the world’s alright with me
Just one look at you
And I know it’s gonna be
A lovely day…..

Yep – that’s what friends do. They make each day lovely – no matter what.

Thanks to all my friends for making my days lovely.

XO

Jamie, great piece. I always feel guilty when I can’t find time to connect with friends over coffee. You’re right – the connection is still there, despite the passage of time – and that connection in itself is reason to be happy!

@Heidi – Thank goodness that the passage of time isn’t enough to erode friendships. Still, it will be one of my goals over the coming months (maybe year … just to be more realistic!) to create time to spend with friends. Chance meetings are lovely :) but friendships deserve more time … and so do we. 😉
